Chiefs Thinking They Can Match Patriots Dynasty is Downright Delusional
By Jerry Trotta
Let's start by saying that the Kansas City Chiefs deserve a ton of credit. They dispatched of the San Francisco 49ers, a team that genuinely steamrolled their way to the Super Bowl, to capture the franchise's first world championship in 50 years, using a monster late-game comeback to do so.
On top of that, they did the NFL a great service by preventing Patriots fans from basking in the glory of Jimmy Garoppolo, formerly Tom Brady's supposed successor in New England, hoisting the Lombardi Trophy.
HOWEVER, certain Chiefs players deserve to feel our wrath if they actually think they can replicate the Patriots' dynasty.
We get it, they're the champions, and the unwritten rules say that Kansas City is permitted to spew whatever nonsense that comes to their mind in the moments after their crowning achievement. But losing the plot to THIS extent calls for a rebuttal.
New England's dynasty, which has spanned two decades, is something that the world of sports, let alone the NFL, has never seen before. Further, the Patriots routinely part ways with franchise cornerstones rather than hand them expensive contracts in favor of rounding out their roster. We have no idea if the Chiefs boast this sort of ruthlessness.
Patrick Mahomes, unless he shocks the world and takes a pay cut, is due for a contract that will make him the highest-paid player in league history, meaning it will be impossible for KC to be as deep as they were this season into the future.
Defensive tackle Chris Jones, arguably the defense's most valuable player, is set to hit free agency this summer. That's only the inception of a slew of headaches the Chiefs front office will be dealt in the years to come.
Sure, you could argue that anything is possible with Mahomes locked down for the next decade-plus, but Kansas City is delusional for jumping to these sorts of conclusions. The future is bright, but the Chiefs are in for a rude awakening if they set their standards on par with that of New England's 20-year reign of sovereignty.
Lest we forget they didn't even have a bye until Ryan Fitzpatrick beat the champs in New England? This entire Super Bowl run hung by a thread for an entire month. Dynasty. Please.
Win two or three more Super Bowls in the next five years, and then we can start making comparisons to the Patriots.
