Chris Archer Trade Turning Into a Fireable Offense for Neal Huntington
By Michael Luciano
Neal Huntington deserves a lot of credit for turning the perennial losers in the Pittsburgh Pirates into a respectable franchise. However, he's had some big misses in free agency and on the trade market of late, with the crowning jewel of his incompetence being the acquisition of Chris Archer from the Tampa Bay Rays.
In 17 starts with the Pirates dating back to last year, Archer is 4-7 with a 4.81 ERA, including a 5.55 ERA this season.
In exchange, Tampa Bay received top prospect Austin Meadows, a flamethrowing starter in Tyler Glasnow with A+ stuff and the No. 12 pick in the 2017 MLB Draft in Shane Baz.
While Archer has floundered, Glasnow and Meadows have not only flourished, but look like budding stars. In 29 games, Meadows has hit .340 with nine home runs, establishing himself as piece of Tampa's outfield for a decade.
Glasnow, who was struggling to cut it in Pittsburgh, has gone 6-1 with a 1.86 ERA, finally pitching up to his talent level.
We haven't even seen Baz yet, and the Rays have already made out like bandits in this trade.
Then again, if you're the Pirates, any time you get to trade three elite prospects for a declining pitcher in his 30s, you make that deal, right?
