Chris Harris Would Be Perfect Signing for Cowboys After Likely Byron Jones Departure
By Jerry Trotta
As we inch closer to the beginning of the NFL's new league year on March 18, it's becoming increasingly likely that impending free agent cornerback Byron Jones will be playing for a team in 2020 that is not the Dallas Cowboys.
That will be a bitter pill to swallow for fans in Dallas -- especially if he lands in Philadelphia -- but diehards can absolutely take solace in the report that the Cowboys are one of the teams interested in courting free agent cornerback Chris Harris Jr.
It certainly wouldn't be a like-for-like swap for Dallas, as Jones, 27, has much more upside and prime years remaining than the 30-year-old Harris. However, the latter is absolutely the second-best corner hitting the open market this offseason.
There's no denying that Harris has dropped off a bit in recent seasons, but he is still widely considered as one of the premier lockdown corners in the NFL. Additionally, Pro Football Focus' seasonal ratings graded the four-time Pro Bowler as the fourth-best corner in terms of defending the run in 2019.
The Cowboys have numerous flaws on defense, and most would argue that poor tackling was the team's most glaring blemish last season. Harris won't fix that issue himself, but he'll go a long way towards band-aiding it.
The icing on the cake? It's been well documented that Harris grew up a Cowboys fan, so Jerry Jones and Co. won't have to think twice of the former Jayhawk merely chasing money. He'll want to play for Dallas, no question about it.
In the likely event that Jones finds a new home in free agency, we really couldn't think of a better signing for the Cowboys than Harris.
