Christian Yelich's Last 162 Games Are the Stuff of Legend
By Ryan Giglio
Many expected 2018 National League MVP Christian Yelich to regress in 2019. Yelich had other ideas.
Yelich, 27, has claimed his place as one of the top player's in the sport, and his numbers over the past 162 games, dating back to last season, are outstanding.
The Brewers outfielder has 217 hits, 61 home runs, 147 RBI and a .349/.440/.733 slash line in that span. He's even stolen 33 bases, showing what a complete player he is.
If these 162 games occurred in just one season, only three NL players would have more RBI in a season than Yelich. The record, 191, happened in 1930 by Hall of Famer Hack Wilson. Only six players have hit more than 61 bombs in one season.
Yelich came to Milwaukee in a January 2018 trade with the Miami Marlins for prospects and produced immediately. In his first season with the Brewers, Yelich hit 36 home runs, 110 RBI with a .326 average and 1.000 OPS.
Proving how important he is to the team, Yelich hit a game-tying home run off of Cubs closer Craig Kimbrel in the top-of-the tenth inning on Saturday, setting up a walk0off bomb from Keston Hiura later in the inning.
The Brewers will hope Yellich can once again carry them to a division title and deep into the playoffs in 2019. Some reinforcements to their pitching staff may go a long way, but their MVP will play no small role in their potential surge during the final two months of the year.
