Christian Yelich Should Be Considered Fully Ahead of Cody Bellinger in the NL MVP Race
By Jerry Trotta
We still have another half season to go in 2019, but what Christian Yelich is presently pulling off for the Milwaukee Brewers is nothing short of extraordinary. The two-time All-Star is somehow managing to follow up his 2019 MVP campaign with an even more remarkable season.
On Thursday night, Yelich propelled the Brew Crew to their third consecutive victory that now sees them atop the standings in the NL Central. He clubbed home run No. 30 of the season, becoming the first player in Brewers franchise history to reach 30 dingers before the All-Star Break.
Open your eyes, folks. As of July 2, Christian Yelich is more deserving of the 2019 National League MVP crown ahead of the Dodgers' Cody Bellinger.
Let's compare the stats for a second.
Bellinger is batting .346 to go with 27 home runs, 67 RBI and a staggering 1.137 OPS. While tremendous, those numbers are largely skewed from his historic first month and are destined to regress to the mean in the second half.
Christian is batting .330 along with 30 home runs, 66 RBI and, somehow, a better OPS at 1.139. The thing about Yelich, however, is that he gets better after the All-Star break.
Last year, the 27-year-old superstar hit a ridiculous .367/.449/.770 with 25 home runs in the final 65 games of 2019.
On top of it all, he's on pace to make a little bit of history this season.
Yelich is absurdly on pace for 60 home runs and 40 stolen bases -- a virtually never-before-seen pairing of stats in big league history. Per baseball reference, the most stolen bases recorded by anyone in a 50-HR season is 24, held by Willie Mays and Alex Rodriguez.
Christian is simply in uncharted territory across the boards and his efforts should have him in prime position to win his second consecutive MVP award.
