Christopher Johnson Reportedly Went Behind Mike Maccagnan's Back to Find Replacement for Todd Bowles
By Will Fowler
Things were going so (relatively) well for the New York Jets this offseason. An emerging leader in Jamal Adams, a quarterback primed for a breakout second season, and some of the best free agents in the class had Gang Green in the discussion for a potential Wild Card spot in 2019. But, if the last month has shown us anything, it's that nothing has truly changed with this franchise.
With rumors of Todd Bowles being fired at the end of the 2018 season swirling around last fall, it seems Johnson got a little bit of a head start on the search for his replacement-- a search that didn't include the person who was supposed to be in charge of that process, now-former general manager Mike Maccagnan.
This also tells us that Johnson had no plans of keeping Maccagnan around, either. The front office boss, of course, was fired weeks ago, with new head coach Adam Gase filling in as interim GM until a permanent hire is made. But if Johnson knew he was going to give Macc the axe, why was the guy allowed to spend close to $100 million in free agency, spearhead the head coaching search, and make the call on the Jets' No. 3 overall pick in April's draft?
Sure, the Jets will be better on paper this year. But from the front office to the owner's suite, it's the same old "Just End the Season" J-E-T-S.
