Chuba Hubbard's Mentions Tell the Whole Story of Why it's So Hard for College Athletes to Speak Out

Oklahoma State running back Chuba Hubbard boldly asserted that he is going on a brief hiatus from the football team until "things change" after head coach Mike Gundy was spotted in a "One America News" shirt on a fishing trip.

While Hubbard was commended by many for his bravery and was supported by Cowboy teammates past and present, several grown adults, many of whom hid behind the anonymity of Twitter, went after Hubbard's character, intelligence, and integrity, illustrating why many college football players are silent on larger social issues.

When they're not insulting his intelligence despite the fact he has been a model student-athlete, his detractors are claiming that he's a totally irrelevant player, willfully ignoring how he is a 2020 Heisman Trophy contender and a potential first-round NFL Draft pick.

Many claimed that Hubbard is just another triggered liberal moaning about someone with conservative views. These people fail to understand that OAN is more of a conspiracy theory breeder than Republican-slanted news source.

Some even decried this as an example of "cancel culture" gone mad, which is both factually inaccurate and a sign that they simply can't see that the issues between Hubbard and Gundy clearly go deeper than just a shirt.

The "cancel culture" debate doesn't apply here, as the fact several current and former players are supporting Hubbard show that the seeds of distrust in Gundy within Cowboy program have been sown long ago.

Just when his mentions started to look civilized and complimentary, more grown men started calling him stupid while misspelling words and using incorrect grammar. Oh, the irony.

At least Chuba's mind isn't so small that he misspells "lightweight."

We need to be crystal clear about what happened. A kid who just turned 21 years old said that he disagrees with the fact his coach was tacitly supporting a news outlet that brazenly broadcasts misinformation, conspiracies, and fabrications. Grown adults then started unfairly maligning the character of a model teammate that has been squeaky clean until this point. And people wonder why some athletes are hesitant to use their platform to speak out.
