Clint Frazier Returns to Outfield in Wednesday's Yankees Lineup
By Sean Facey
Clint Frazier is out of the defensive dog house, at least for the moment.
After spending a game as the designated hitter, Frazier has returned to the outfield for the Yankees' game against the Blue Jays, giving artificial turf a try for the first time in 2019.
Frazier's defensive struggles have been well-documented this season, and they reached a tipping point when he made a string of terrible plays in Sunday's 8-5 loss to the Red Sox.
Things got so bad that Frazier didn't even make himself available to the media after the game, though he eventually held court with the press in an emotionally raw manner two days later.
His bat is simply too good to keep out of the lineup, especially with Giancarlo Stanton and Aaron Judge still recovering from injury, but he's been a liability on defense more often than not, per advanced stats and the eye test alike.
His -8 defensive runs saved are tied for second-lowest among all outfielders with a minimum of 250 innings played, and his -19.2 UZR/150 is the ninth-lowest mark in the game.
Former big league players such as Eric Byrnes have given their own thoughts on the situation in an attempt to remedy the problem.
It's unclear when an answer will come, but for now, manager Aaron Boone seems ready to place his faith back in the young star.
