Clippers Admitting They Need Help at Trade Deadline Proves Lakers Are in Their Heads
The Los Angeles Clippers are second in the Western Conference with a 35-15 record, just behind their rivals, the LA Lakers, who are pacing the conference with a 38-11 record. Two of those Lakers losses, however, notably came at the hands of the Clips
For some reason, though, the Lakers are still very much in the heads of their hometown rivals. The Clipper organization isn't comfortable enough with the roster they've assembled, and are looking for a bit more scoring punch down the stretch.
Why would the Clippers need to make a trade? The team is incredibly deep, and their defense is like a brick wall in crunch time. Most importantly, they have beaten their Los Angeles counterparts twice in two tries, and the Lakers are the most likely team standing in their path to the NBA title. It seems as though this is an arms race; the Clippers need to stockpile as much star power as possible for reasons other than simply winning basketball games.
Such is life in Hollywood.
In terms of the on-court product, however, there is one major advantage the Lakers have over the Clips: their size. With Anthony Davis, Javale McGee and Dwight Howard, the Lake Show has a trio of big men that can dominate around the rim, and the Clippers do not have a strong counter, hence their interest of Andre Drummond as an upgrade over Ivica Zubac.
While the Clippers should be trying to improve, trading for the sake of acquiring bigger names may do more harm than good for a team that could still win a title as constructed. If they rearrange the deck chairs too aggressively, it will simply serve to prove the fact that they're fatally obsessed with the glitz and glamour of the Purple and Gold.
