Colts Can Complete Their Offseason With This Sneaky Move
By Scott Rogust
It's hard to find any glaring holes in the Indianapolis Colts' roster. General manager Chris Ballard has done a great job in drafting and finding bargains in free agency. While they're a relatively complete team, they do need to find some help at edge rusher.
The Colts are known to work in silence, so they'd be wise to emerge from the shadows and sign free agent edge rusher Everson Griffen before the start of the regular season.
When you watched the Colts last season, it was clear they had trouble getting to the quarterback. They only tallied 41 sacks on the year, ranking in the middle of the entire league, with Justin Houston being the lone defender to post double-digits on the year. Additionally, the team moved on from Jabaal Sheard, so there's an opening on the edge.
While many Colts fans will clamor for Jadeveon Clowney, considering the team has over $24 million in cap space, the wiser move would be to sign Griffen.
The former Minnesota Viking is much more productive than Clowney (seriously) and will come at a cheaper price. Last season, Griffen recorded 41 tackles, 24 quarterback hits, and eight sacks, all of which are higher totals than what the former Seattle Seahawk put up (albeit while constantly double-teamed).
Indianapolis' goal this offseason was to bolster their defensive line. They got a head start on that by flipping their 2020 first-round pick in a sign-and-trade deal with the San Francisco 49ers for defensive tackle DeForest Buckner. While that's a great move, the Colts can go a step further by signing Griffen to pair alongside Houston, with Kemoko Turay and Ben Banogu coming off the bench.
Do it, Colts, but act fast before another team grabs him!
