Colts Losing Spencer Ware for the Season Puts More Pressure on Andrew Luck and Marlon Mack
By Jerry Trotta
Stop us if you've heard this before, but the Indianapolis Colts are preparing for (another) season of asking Andrew Luck to do virtually everything on offense.
To be fair, the organization attempted to relieve some of that burden with the signing of Spencer Ware, hoping the former Chiefs tailback would be able to handle the load alongside the likes of Marlon Mack, who finished with 918 yards and nine touchdowns a year ago.
Because the injury gods are as cruel as can be, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport has just confirmed that the Colts have placed Ware on the Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform List (PUP), ending his season before it even started.
Over his career, the LSU product has rushed for 1,580 yards on 340 carries to go with 11 touchdowns. That's a career 4.64 yards per carry and if you've paid attention to Ware's game-time with Kansas City in recent years, the imposing numbers shouldn't surprise you.
He often served as a third-down, chase of pace back to the likes of Jamaal Charles and Kareem Hunt. However, the Ohio native has always displayed the potential of being a true, No.1 RB.
This couldn't be worse news for one Andrew Luck, coming off a season of attempting an astronomically-high 639 pass attempts, easily his career-high. It's really no wonder he threw for 39 touchdowns (and 15 interceptions) to go with 4,593 passing yards.
Indy literally asked the four-time Pro-Bowler to do EVERYTHING in 2018 and Ware's injury indicates that the former Stanford stud will have to run it back again in 2019.
It should be the last thing that Colts fans want to hear for their delicate franchise cornerstone. They had better hope Luck's shoulder is fully healed because it's about to embark on one heck of a workload.
