Colts Absolutely Need to Call the Browns if Rumors of Vikings-Odell Beckham Jr. Trade Are True
By Scott Rogust
There were contradictory reports on Wednesday morning that set the NFL world ablaze. At first, it appeared that the Cleveland Browns were close to parting ways with wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. after one year to send him to the Minnesota Vikings. Hours later, a Vikings source called the trade rumor "false."
Whether it's true or not, there's an old adage that says "if there's smoke, there's fire." In this case, if Beckham is being linked to trades, then it's certainly possible that the Browns are serious in moving on from OBJ. If that's truly the case, the Indianapolis Colts should be calling.
The Colts have placed high expectations on themselves, based off the moves they made this offseason. Indianapolis signed former Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers and made the huge trade to acquire defensive tackle DeForest Buckner in a deal with the San Francisco 49ers. With the Tennessee Titans and Houston Texans expected to be the Colts' main competition for the AFC South crown, they need to make one more move to put them over the edge.
Beckham can do that for Indy. Yes, he's coming off a relatively down season, but that can be attributed to his season-long core injury and the lack of a quality offensive line in Cleveland. Even so, Beckham still accumulated over 1,000 receiving yards last season.
Indianapolis already has a stout offensive line, so Rivers is going to have time in the pocket to wait for Beckham to breakaway downfield. Oh, and there's the caveat that Beckham will pair up with fellow stud TY Hilton. Talk about a vicious one-two punch.
The Colts can absolutely make this trade happen. They can trade their second and fifth-round selections in the 2021 NFL Draft to bring Odell to Indy and create an offensive powerhouse in the process. Don't overthink it, just do it.
