Colts Were Stupid Enough to Sign Xavier Rhodes

While most people probably found it weird that the Vikings let go of one of their veteran defensive backs fresh off a trip to the Pro Bowl, there should be an exception to the madness here: after all, did you watch Xavier Rhodes last year?

The 29-year old cornerback shook off some rookie jitters and eventually became a consistent starter in Minnesota's secondary, but hasn't been the same reliable shutdown defender he once was for a long while. There was tension between Rhodes and the Vikings staff throughout 2019, and it boiled up to his release ahead of free agency.

Despite his brutal 2019 season, it was never a matter of if a team would be bold enough to pick up Rhodes this offseason, but rather who and when. Well, now we know.

The Colts don't have an incredibly deep cornerback rotation, so they'll use all the help they can get. Contract details haven't been reported yet, but given it's just a one-year deal, it would be fair to assume that Rhodes won't be making anything close to his $8-10 million base salary from the previous three seasons.

The Colts have been one of the more active NFL teams early on this offseason, but their signing of Rhodes is far from their most significant addition. Indy brought in Philip Rivers and traded for DeForest Buckner, while Rhodes was just a simple replacement for Pierre Desir.

The Colts are taking a step in the right direction this offseason, but it's wrong to think that signing Rhodes will do much for their defense in 2020.
