Colts Trade Quincy Wilson to Jets to Steal Underrated Wazzu WR in 6th Round
By Jerry Trotta
The sixth round of the NFL Draft did not come without unexpected movement.
The New York Jets sent a sixth-round pick to the Indianapolis Colts in exchange for cornerback Quincy Wilson. With the acquired selection, the Colts nabbed grossly underrated Washington State wide receiver Dezmon Patmon.
Indianapolis has wasted no time bolstering its receiving corps in the Draft. The franchise previously utilized the No. 34 overall selection on USC wideout Michael Pittman.
If GM Chris Ballard was looking for unteachable athleticism with his pick, well, he got exactly that in Patmon. The 6-4, 228-pound (!) wideout welcomes contact by defenders and is highly proficient at hauling in contested passes. In four seasons at WSU, Patmon registered156 receptions for 1,976 yards and 13 touchdowns, eight of which came in 2019.
Given the surplus of WR talent in the 2020 class, the former Cougar's name fell well under the radar entering the Draft. It really comes as no surprise that he fell to the sixth round, and the consensus is that the Colts got a steal.
Patmon has a puncher's chance to become a reliable target of quarterback Philip Rivers, who loves chucking up jump balls to his physically-imposing receivers.
