Compelling Stat Shows Packers Have Clear Path to Exposing Jimmy Garoppolo
By Michael Luciano
Jimmy Garoppolo might be 15-3 as the starting quarterback of the San Francisco 49ers, but the book on how to beat him is more or less out. If you get in his grill early and pressure him, he's proven to be a below-average passer when the heat is on, with plenty of data points to back that notion up.
Garoppolo has a tough task ahead of him this week, as the 49ers will take on a Green Bay Packers team that sports two of the nine most effective pass rushers in the league in Preston Smith and Za'Darius Smith.
From a clean pocket, Garoppolo's passer rating is higher than the career rating of Aaron Rodgers. When pressured, his rating drops to 63.8, lower than Mark Sanchez in his final year as the Jets starter.
Considering how much of Kyle Shanahan's offense revolves around intermediate routes that require Garoppolo to hang back in the pocket, the presence of the Smiths could be what ends up deciding this game.
There is a light that never goes out, unless adequately pressured.
Garoppolo, when given time, can sling it all over the field with the best of them. However, if the Smiths are able to power past Mike McGlinchey and a stout offensive line, Garoppolo might end up on his rear end more often than he finds the end zone.
