Conference Commissioners' Phone Call With Mike Pence Doesn't Bode Well for College Football's Return Anytime Soon
By Michael Luciano
Most major American sports have been put totally on hold due to the coronavirus pandemic, and there's a lot of uncertainty surrounding the 2020 college football season even though it's far off. But the updates we are hearing certainly aren't good.
In a call with Vice President Mike Pence, commissioners of major college football conferences made it clear that they will not begin playing games unless students are allowed back on campus.
Most college campuses are currently empty with schools shifting to remote learning. That has impacted the offseason programs of many of college football's best teams when you consider several spring games have been cancelled due to the virus.
In the words of Dr. Anthony Fauci, "You don't make the timeline, the virus does." Taking that into account, inviting students back to campus before medical professionals have deemed large gatherings of people are not a major health risk could undo all the positive strides we have made to this point. This is totally the right choice.
As painful as it sounds, there's a chance this virus messes with the start of the college football season. Stay inside, practice social distancing, and wash your hands if you want the season to start on time.
