Cornerbacks the Cowboys Need to Consider in Free Agency to Replace Byron Jones
By Thomas Carannante
The Dallas Cowboys seem just fine following the loss of Byron Jones. The front office managed to keep Anthony Brown on a multi-year contract this offseason and the returns of Jourdan Lewis and Chidobe Awuzie will help fortify the secondary.
But guess what? You can never have too many cornerbacks in the NFL, especially with how the passing game has evolved in addition to the growing number of injuries each and every year. Depth in the secondary is key for any team looking to make a Super Bowl run.
So, for the Cowboys' sake, here are three cost-effective corners the team can still go after in free agency to help cope with Jones' departure.
3. Tramon Williams
The Packers made it evident they would not be bringing back Tramon Williams after his two-year deal expired, so now the veteran is looking for a new home for his age-37 season. Williams has endless experience in the league and helped Green Bay's young corners develop into the forces they are today, so such an addition on a short-term deal would be beneficial for the Cowboys in more ways than one. Packers fans still want him back, so the man was clearly doing something right this past season.
2. Jimmy Smith
Jimmy Smith has been with the Ravens for nine years and showed the world he can be a shutdown corner/turnover machine when he's healthy. He's obviously no longer atop his game at this point in his career, but his tenacity and veteran experience can help the Cowboys against heavier passing attacks. He can perhaps be had on the cheaper side considering he was limited to just nine games in 2019 and hasn't played a full season since 2015.
1. Prince Amukamara
We didn't say the Cowboys need a long-term solution. They just could use a veteran with ample experience to help bolster the unit. Enter Prince Amukamara, who has ample experience in the NFC East after playing for years with the Giants. He was a cap casualty for the Bears this offseason and could be had at a fairly decent price. It's something the Cowboys should explore if they really want to take that next step.
