Cowboys Absolutely Need to Hire Urban Meyer After He Expressed Interest in Head Coaching Job
By Chris Russo
The Dallas Cowboys need a coach who can win a championship. Urban Meyer has won three.
The Cowboys might be in luck, because it seems the former Florida and Ohio State coach just expressed interest in coaching America's Team.
Meyer called said you've "got to" take the Cowboys head coaching job if offered.
It's a perfect fit. Colin Cowherd noted himself that Jerry Jones hired both Jimmy Johnson and Barry Switzer out of college programs, and they combined for three Super Bowls in four seasons.
Meyer led the Gators to two National Championships and the Buckeyes to one before retiring after the 2018 season for health reasons. Since retiring, Meyer has been the target of frequent speculation between a number of teams' coaching positions.
The Cowboys have already held on to Jason Garrett for far too long (10 seasons to be exact) and he has not been able to get them past the NFC Divisional Round. Johnson and Switzer won their three Super Bowls in a combined nine seasons as head coach. Garrett's won three division titles over nine seasons, whereas his predecessor, Wade Phillips, went out the door after two in just 3 1/2 seasons.
The Cowboys looked amazing in the first three games, but choked through the next three. They beat the Eagles this past weekend, but that's also because the NFC East as a whole has been terrible this year, and Philly has no secondary.
For all their excellence, the Cowboys still haven't been to the NFC Championship Game, let alone won the Super Bowl, in 23 years. By that reasoning, they don't have anything to lose by hiring Meyer.
