Cowboys Can Complete Their Offseason With This Sneaky Move
By Jerry Trotta
The Dallas Cowboys really pressed the issue this offseason to give new head coach Mike McCarthy as much talent as possible to work with in his first year at the helm. They made needed additions on defense by signing the likes of Gerald McCoy, HaHa Clinton-Dix and Dontari Poe.
That narrative continued in the NFL Draft, where they landed Oklahoma wide receiver CeeDee Lamb and Alabama cornerback Trevon Diggs with their first two picks.
As notable as those acquisitions are, most analysts would agree that Dallas hasn't really replaced CB Byron Jones, who signed with the Miami Dolphins in free agency. That leads us to say that the Cowboys should complete their offseason by signing free agent corner Logan Ryan, who is unquestionably the best player remaining at the position.
Ryan has always been a solid CB -- he was a starter on two Super Bowl-winning New England Patriots teams -- but he really enjoyed a breakout campaign with Tennessee in 2019. We're not exaggerating when we say that the 29-year-old stud was everywhere for the Titans last season.
For the year, he posted 113 tackles (which led the team), 18 pass deflections (which ranked third in the league), four interceptions and four forced fumbles. He even wreaked havoc in the backfield with 4.5 sacks and eight QB hits.
While players like Anthony Brown, Jourdan Lewis, Chidobe Awuzie and Diggs are an adequate rotation of cornerbacks, the Cowboys lack a clear No. 1 option. Landing Ryan would solve that problem. Cutting expendable and expensive defensive lineman Tyrone Crawford would free up the necessary cap space to offer the Rutgers product a respectable contract.
Nothing should stop Dallas from pulling this off.
