Cowboys WR CeeDee Lamb is Going to Fulfill Jerry Jones' Wish With Jersey Number and We Don't Know Why
By Jerry Trotta
Other than signing their first-ever contract, there really is no greater pleasure for new NFL draftees than picking the number that they will don for their rookie season and beyond. Often times, these figures hold a special meaning to players.
That's why we're so confused with the decision by Dallas Cowboys wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, the team's No. 17 overall selection.
The former Oklahoma star was set on choosing No. 10, but opted to adhere to the request of Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, who preferred No. 88 for the rookie wideout.
No. 88 obviously carries great weight in Dallas as it was formerly repped by Michael Irvin, Drew Pearson and Dez Bryant, some of the greatest WRs in franchise history. As Cowboys, all three players rank in the top-five for receptions and receiving yards.
It's easy to see why Jones wanted Lamb to wear the iconic number, but the 21-year-old has earned the right to choose his own. Had he went with No. 10, all three of Dallas' main receivers would be sporting numbers below 20. That's sort of cool!
Amari Cooper wears No. 19 and Michael Gallup reps No. 13. Lamb would've completed a very rare trifecta.
This obviously isn't too big of a deal. It just further confirms that Jones loves to have a say in almost everything that goes on in Dallas. We would've liked to see the 77-year-old billionaire give Lamb some more freedom in this decision.
