One Surprise Cut the Dallas Cowboys Could Still Make This Offseason

The Dallas Cowboys stole another solid defensive player late in the draft when they added Louisiana Tech safety Xavier Woods in the sixth round back in 2017, and Woods has started all but three games over the last two seasons.

As hard as it is to believe, however, it wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility for Mike McCarthy to ditch Woods in favor of some other defensive backs on the roster.

The Cowboys hit the secondary hard after Byron Jones left, signing Ha Ha Clinton-Dix to a one-year deal to start at safety, drafting cornerbacks Trevon Diggs in the second round and Reggie Robinson II in the fourth round, and adding Shrine Bowl Defensive MVP Luther Kirk as an undrafted free agent.

In addition, McCarthy has messed around with the idea of moving second-round cornerback Chidobe Awuzie, who really started to come into his own last season, to safety. With both Awuzie and Woods playing at a respectable level last season, the Cowboys are likely to feel more indebted to a second-rounder instead of a sixth-rounder, which could push Woods to the bench -- or all the way to free agency.

Woods has given the Cowboys some solid value over the last two seasons, but some of their moves on defense signify that they could be moving away from the former Bulldog. Don't rule this one out just yet.
