Cowboys Could Be in Trouble With Dak Prescott Contract Negotiations Based on Stephen Jones' Latest Comments
By Jerry Trotta
The Dallas Cowboys' prolonged contract negotiations with Dak Prescott might have just hit a wall.
Franchise vice president Stephen Jones recently spoke on the concern that comes with quarterbacks accounting for too significant of a percentage of a salary cap. Jones' full quote really make it seems like Prescott is anything but a sure thing to return to the Cowboys.
"We've tried to pay him," said the 55-year-old exec. "But the deal's got to be right for Dak. It's got to be right for us. As you know (Mike) the salary cap makes this a zero sum game for owners."
Jones' comments suggest that Dallas isn't exactly willing to make Prescott the highest-paid signal caller in the NFL, even though he'll only hold that title for a short period of time with other QBs, like Patrick Mahomes, also due for extensions.
The Cowboys clearly want nothing more than to sign Prescott to a long-term extension, but the longer they wait, the more time it gives the former third-round pick to consider his alternatives.
With each week that Dak goes unsigned, the chances of someone else starting for Dallas under center in 2021 increases. Stay tuned for updates, folks. This stalemate isn't ending anytime soon.
