The Case for the Cowboys Drafting Jalen Hurts to Eventually Ditch Dak Prescott
By Michael Luciano
The Dallas Cowboys might have slapped quarterback Dak Prescott with the franchise tag, but that doesn't mean that they're 100% sure he's going to be around for the long haul. After all, contract negotiations haven't exactly gone as planned over the past year, which led to the tag and instead Amari Cooper getting a big extension.
So how about some insurance? Jerry Jones and Co. conducted an interview with former Oklahoma star quarterback Jalen Hurts, which could be a sign that the Cowboys are willing to select Prescott's eventual successor in the draft.
Hurts' style of play is very similar to Prescott's, as they are two mobile quarterbacks with above average, if unspectacular, arm strength who like to throw the ball deep down the field. While Hurts is less polished as a passer, he's more of a playmaker outside of structure than Prescott.
Give Hurts a line and some weapons, like Oklahoma and Alabama did, and he'll win you plenty of games. Luckily for Hurts, Dallas has proven to be one of the best teams in all of football when it comes to drafting in those two key areas.
Hurts has a lot of room to grow as a passer, but the Cowboys have proven they can get to the playoffs with a young QB given the strong foundation of their team. Jones and the front office have become tremendous at drafting talent all over the defense and along the offensive line, which is paramount to survival in the NFL. If Prescott isn't willing to accept Dallas' future offer before the extension deadline in July, the Cowboys could blow this whole thing up and start again with Hurts in 2021.
