Cowboys Insider Claims to Have More Info on Dak Prescott Contract Talks and it's All Insane
By Michael Luciano
It's May 2020, and a contract that Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott was talking about signing during the 2019 offseason has still yet to materialize. However, thanks to Chris Simms and SI's Mike Fisher, we might finally have some clarity as to what the holdup is.
Simms claims that Prescott, who threw for 4,952 yards under Kellen Moore last season, was offered a five-year, $175 million contract, with $45 million coming his way in the final year of that contract.
This is actually in line with what Fisher has been reporting of late, as five years multiplied by the $35 million in average annual value Fisher claims Prescott is asking for comes out to $175 million.
Even if you're a staunch Prescott supporter, it's fair to question if he is truly worth becoming the highest-paid quarterback in the league, unless he really hits his stride under Mike McCarthy. Of course, there's also the discussion of relative valuation here. Following the league's new, elevated television contracts, it seems possible that $45 million annually will become the norm for top five QBs. Is that the way we should view Dak?
Dak is more than worth a new contract, as quarterbacks as young as he is that are as consistently productive don't come around too often. However, paying him $45 million for one year of football is totally absurd unless he suddenly morphs into Patrick Mahomes.
