Insiders Expect Cowboys to Target Urban Meyer and Josh McDaniels if Jason Garrett Gets Fired
By Michael Luciano
For the first time in what feels like forever, rumors about Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett potentially getting axed might have some actual momentum behind them. If and when it happens, Jerry Jones might just his replacements all lined up.
According to Bleacher Report's Mike Freeman, Garrett needs a Lombardi Trophy (this will not happen!) to save his job this season, and former Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer and New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels would be at the top of the list in terms of potential replacements.
Meyer would be an outside-of-the-box hire for the Cowboys, as he has no NFL coaching experience and seems to be satisfied with his second life as Ohio State's assistant athletic director and a college football analyst for FOX. Working for Jerry Jones, he'd never dream of coming even close to the same kind of power and autonomy he had as a college coach.
McDaniels, if he can be had, would make tons of sense. After serving as the offensive coordinator on the legendary 2007 Patriots, McDaniels took the Denver Broncos head coaching job in 2009. He was fired after an 11-17 record, and since returned to New England. He was named head coach of the Indianapolis Colts in 2018 only to leave them at the altar pretty much immediately and ran back to New England, although he did interview for the Green Bay Packers job last offseason.
Either one of these guys would at least be an upgrade over Garrett, who appears to have flatlined. Meyer and McDaniels might say they're happy in TV and New England, respectively, but the allure of the Cowboys could be too much to pass up.
