Cowboys' Jaylon Smith Calls Out Rex Ryan Over Ridiculous Criticism of Amari Cooper
By Adam Weinrib
Likely because the sports world is largely static right now, Rex Ryan and his TV commentator ilk have been forced to dredge up some truly "out there" takes in recent weeks.
Ryan's been the champion of the absurd thus far, though, using ESPN air time to call Amari Cooper a "turd" whom he would never have bothered to pay on the grounds that he rarely shows up in big games.
Seemingly emanating from either Cooper's injury-marred performance in last year's consequential NFC East clash in Philadelphia (or from absolutely nothing!), this take and the non-apology that followed did not sit well with Coop's Cowboys teammate, Jaylon Smith.
“That was ridiculous," Smith told Doug Gottlieb in a Fox Sports Radio appearance. “A hundred percent do not agree. That was wicked. Wicked is the word."
We're glad to see the 'Boys have Cooper's back, seeing as he re-upped at quite a high cost this offseason. It's telling that no one in the locker room seems to hold the same grudge that Rex Ryan does, considering Ryan has been socially distant from Cooper's career since the very beginning.
Even Ryan's apology, of course, included a hamfisted defense of his original take, backed up only by stray hunches.
We're not sure how Ryan's opinion got formed in the first place, but it doesn't have any endorsements anywhere in the Dallas clubhouse.
