These Numbers Suggest Cowboys WR Michael Gallup is Ready to Be a Star
By Alexander Wolz
There are a number of stern questions hanging over the Dallas Cowboys, but the wide receiver position is not one of them. The arrival and re-signing of Amari Cooper cemented that fact, while newcomer CeeDee Lamb will further add to the cause in his rookie campaign.
But one weapon has slid a bit under the radar so far. Despite putting up impressive numbers in his second season, Michael Gallup's name is less than a famous one for many NFL fans. Based on a pair of key improvements, his leap to stardom could be close at hand.
Gallup saw a 12-point improvement in his overall receiving grade from Pro Football Focus between 2018 and 2019, which is rated on a 1-100 scale, while nearly doubling his yards per route run. This should not come as a surprise in either case, but seeing it spelled out on paper is illuminating.
The Colorado State product caught 33 passes for 507 yards his rookie season, starting eight games. Last season, Gallup earned 12 starts, doubling his output for a 66-catch, 1,107-yard year, while growing his touchdown numbers from two to six.
With those improvements, it is no wonder that Gallup's name has become a hot one in rumored trade talks for Jamal Adams. But as most in Dallas know, Gallup's potential is truly enticing, and letting him go won't come about easily.
After two seasons, Gallup has risen to one of the league's primary secondary receivers. Expect that rise to continue this season, as he has every chance to make the leap and cement his status as a star.
