Cowboys Need to Cut Ties With Jason Garrett Before He Swindles Them Into Re-Signing Him
There have been few NFL situations more bizarre than what is currently taking place between Jason Garrett and the Dallas Cowboys.
Jerry Jones has refused to officially fire the coach, as Garrett's contract ends in about one week. The Cowboys are conducting other interviews and while Garrett should just pack up and go home, he is reportedly fighting to stay on as head coach.
This if frankly just a bit sad, and also Jones' fault. By not firing Garrett and making it official, he has left the door open to be guilted by the head coach.
Jones has to just tell Garrett it is over. Being guilted into re-signing the coach would be an absolute disaster and would show that Jones has no authority over his team.
This is reminiscent of a bad breakup where one person just can't come out and say it's over, so the other keeps pretending like nothing is wrong and denying the end has arrived.
It doesn't appear that Jones will keep Garrett in 2020. But the longer this drags out the more likely it is that Jones at least listens to Garrett's plans to improve and be a better coach. And if that happens, Jones may chicken out and let the relationship linger instead of being a strong leader and cutting it off.
