Cowboys Need to Sign Trey Burton to Help Solve Their Weak Tight End Situation
By Jerry Trotta
The Dallas Cowboys made the easy decision to move on from franchise legend Jason Witten this offseason. Shortly after doing so, they appointed Blake Jarwin as the team's No. 1 tight end by giving him a four-year, $22 million contract.
While Jarwin has flashed potential indicating that he could one day be a starting tight end in the NFL, he's largely an unproven commodity. Luckily for Dallas, a capable TE has just hit the open market: Trey Burton, formerly of the Chicago Bears.
The Cowboys should waste no time signing Burton, who will likely come for pennies on the dollar following his injury-riddled 2019 campaign.
In 2018, Burton compiled 54 receptions for 569 touchdowns and 6 touchdowns -- all career-highs -- in his first season in the Windy City. Those are solid numbers for a player in his first year as a starter, especially in a Bears offense that lacked playmakers.
Burton would play the role as quarterback Dak Prescott's security blanket, which Witten has undeniably left in his wake. Jarwin is a nice player, but signing Burton would serve as a solid bandage if Jarwin doesn't pan out.
After all, the former Oklahoma State tight end has only 58 catches for 672 yards and 6 touchdowns since being drafted in 2017. Burton can be had for cheap and would give the Cowboys reliable depth.
