The Dallas Cowboys have made Amari Cooper the top receiver in town by giving him a $100 million deal this offseason. After him, however, the depth chart is a bit thin, with Michael Gallup as the only other true threat. Randall Cobb and Jason Witten are both gone, meaning the Cowboys need some talent to make sure a double-teamed Cooper doesn't derail the offense.

Rumors have surfaced of the Cowboys specifically focusing on adding a slot receiver. The two names in the rumor mill are Arizona Cardinals receiver Christian Kirk and San Francisco 49ers receiver Marquise Goodwin.

All told, these are not the kind of big names that Cowboys fans may have been clamoring for. Kirk is the more intriguing option because he is only 23 years old and had 709 receiving yards last season; the fact that he spent his college days at Texas A&M won't hurt, but he's not quite an automatic breakout candidate.

Goodwin is 29 years old and is coming off an injury that ended his 2019 season after only nine games. His best season came in 2017 when he had 962 yards. His next-best total for an entire season is just 431 yards. His career marks do not make him someone Cowboys fans would be very excited about.

It takes a lot to move the needle in Big D. With that in mind, the NFL Draft is a far better route for enhancing their wide receiver depth chart.

The only potential benefit here is that the Cowboys could make a trade for one of these guys only give up a late-round pick in return, likely no more than a fifth-rounder.

Either Kirk or Goodwin could come in with little pressure after being given up on by their previous teams, and sometimes, a change of scenery makes an under-the-radar trade a great one. But for now, improving through the draft has got to be a better plan.
