Cowboys Targeting Penn State DE Yetur Gross-Matos Should Make Everyone Forget About Robert Quinn
By Scott Rogust
The Dallas Cowboys had a very active offseason, and if they add the right pieces in the upcoming NFL Draft, they could seriously solidify their spot as an NFC contender. All told, the biggest question on the table comes down to how the team will use their first-round pick, which arrives at No. 17 overall.
Well, ESPN's Jeremy Fowler revealed that the Cowboys have done their due diligence on Penn State pass rusher Yetur Gross-Matos, and haven't ruled out trading back in the first round to select him. Not only would that move earn them extra picks, but it would help Cowboys fans forget all about Robert Quinn leaving for the Chicago Bears in free agency.
When watching the Cowboys last season, $105 million defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence was less ineffective due to facing multiple blockers throughout the season. Quinn feasted, but the interior defensive line couldn't fully capitalize.
This offseason, the team added defensive tackles Gerald McCoy and Dontari Poe to lineup alongside Lawrence, and are just one edge rusher away from creating a dominant defensive line in 2020. Gross-Matos could fit in perfectly.
Throughout his three seasons at Happy Valley, Gross-Matos recorded 111 tackles (36.5 for loss) and 18.5 sacks. He's projected to be a first-round pick, but taking him 17th overall is just a bit too high for many draft experts. If Dallas is truly in love with him, they'd benefit by moving down a few spots to draft Gross-Matos while also adding additional draft capital.
Re-signing Robert Quinn was never a feasible option for the Cowboys, as evidenced by his $70 million contract. They'd be much better off drafting a rookie edge rusher that will come at a much cheaper price -- while also presenting more potential than Quinn in the long run.
