This Cowboys-Texans Trade Involving Dak Prescott and Deshaun Watson Would Turn the NFL Upside Down
By Jerry Trotta
Both the Dallas Cowboys and Houston Texans are presently faced with predicaments at the quarterback position.
Dallas appears reluctant as humanly possible in doling out big money to Dak Prescott as contract extension talks continue to hit roadblocks. A short while ago, the team decided to place the franchise tag the 26-year-old signal caller. Houston, or should we say GM/head coach Bill O'Brien, meanwhile, is seemingly doing everything in his power to deprive Deshaun Watson of a playoff-caliber roster. It just seems like a sure thing that the former No. 12 overall pick will demand at trade at some point. After all, his cryptic tweets after the DeAndre Hopkins trade hinted at his unhappiness, and it's hard to believe the acquisition of Brandin Cooks is going to change any of that (if it's indeed the case).
These two teams should absolutely consider solving each other's problems with a blockbuster trade.
Swap Dak for Deshaun (assuming Dak is willing to agree to an extension with Houston)! The Texans can get a new start with another franchise QB, and then the Cowboys can figure things out with Watson, whose rookie deal expires after 2021.
Money isn't at all a problem here, so agreeing to terms shouldn't be too difficult. The Texans currently flaunt the 10th-most cap space in the NFL at $19.47 million, and they therefore have the funds to afford Prescott's $28.72 million cap hit for the 2020 season and offer him an extension should they choose to do so. Watson's cap hit is $13.84 million for 2020.

As for Watson, the 24-year-old star will command big money when his time for free agency approaches, but it'll buy Dallas more time and Jerry Jones can start new talks with someone who isn't constantly playing hardball with him.
In a perfect world, this is a straight-up swap if Dak can agree to an extension with the Texans. That's the only way this will happen.
The Cowboys would move forward with a gunslinger they know is deserving to be one of the highest-paid in the NFL and can take another year or two to give him that money, while the Texans would rid themselves of what is sure to be a relentless migraine and cash in on Watson before he likely bolts in free agency anyway.
It's a win-win proposal for both sides given the suspected circumstances.
