Former Cowboys OL Travis Frederick's Next Big Project is Exactly What We Need Right Now
By Scott Rogust
Former Dallas Cowboys center Travis Frederick announced his retirement from the NFL earlier this year. Most athletes would relax in their homes during their first year without any football obligations, but not Frederick.
After the coronavirus pandemic first struck the United States earlier this year, Frederick saw spikes in childhood hunger across the Dallas/Fort Worth area in north Texas. So, the former offensive lineman created "The Blocking Hunger Foundation" to feed children throughout the school year and the summer.
"Obviously, more people are out of work, and more importantly, children are out of school and a lot of them lost access to free meals," Frederick said, via ESPN. "If people don't have a job and can't continue to provide, we're definitely seeing an increase in demand."
Once the spread of COVID-19 shut down schools, many children lost out on two free or reduced-price meals per day due to tricky financial situations facing countless families. Fredrick solved that issue, as students were able to access "Travis' Pantries" and the Nourish2Flourish programs to receive their meals.
Frederick's not stopping there, as he created a "Moving the Chains to Block Hunger" fundraiser to raise $22,500, which will help feed 10,000 children. The campaign began on May 18 and will conclude on July 29.
His days of playing football may be over, but Frederick is usuing his platform to help the worthiest of causes during this ongoing pandemic. Bravo, Travis.
