Cowboys Working Out Trio of Kickers in Wake of Brett Maher's Struggles
By Adam Weinrib
It appears Dallas has officially reached that very special part of any disappointing season where they've decided to assign blame at the margins and work out a slew of mystery kickers.
Brett Maher, the Cowboys' current specialist, found the wrong type of spotlight on Thanksgiving Day when he went 0-for-2 from the field in a 26-15 loss that...wasn't that close, but might've featured better optics if he'd done his job.
With a pressure-filled stretch ahead of them, Dallas is now looking at backup options, bringing three kickers in for a workout on Sunday.
Rose, a 25-year-old free agent who was once a Texas Longhorn, might be a favorite of the home fans before he ever gets close to inking a contract.
MacGinnis, formerly a Kentucky Wildcat, is currently a rostered member of Dallas' XFL franchise, and would be plundered before his season even began.
Vizcaino, a UW Husky, was briefly a Bengal, though he has yet to make an NFL impact.
On the year, Maher has hit only 67.9% of his kicks, though his extra-point percentage is at a pristine 100. He may not be Dallas' sole problem, or even its most correctable, but it could be time to try and catch lightning in a bottle. Maher's no Dan Bailey, after all.
