Creating the Perfect 2020 New York Yankees Pitcher
By Jerry Trotta
Major League Baseball appears to be trying its hardest to get the 2020 season underway. News broke this week which claimed that the league is working on a proposal, ratified by the CDC, of course, that would see play resume as soon as May.
As much as we'd love to see the MLB season start within the next three weeks, this proposition obviously comes with great risk. Until we are provided with solid evidence which suggests that the league has a realistic shot at returning that soon, we'll continue to be skeptical.
In the meantime, let's get creative with the New York Yankees' pitching staff.
As presently constructed, the Yanks have an abundance of talented arms on their roster. That got us thinking: what would the perfect Pinstripes pitcher look like?
Right off the bat, we'd pencil in Aroldis Chapman's triple-digit heater. Consider how jacked the left-hander has gotten this offseason, his fastball velocity might have increased...if that's even possible.
Next up, we have Adam Ottavino's frisbee slider and Masahiro Tanaka's ankle-snatching splitter, both of which flaunt strikeout rates that are among the best in the league.
Selecting a pitch from Gerrit Cole's repertoire, which might be the best in baseball, is impossibly difficult. However, if we had to pick one, we'd have to go with his changeup. The knuckle-curve is lethal, but it also gets Cole into the most trouble of any of his pitches.
To finish off the perfect Yankees pitcher, including Zack Britton's sweeping sinker just seems right. All three of Luis Severino's primary pitches have already been utilized here, and James Paxton's arsenal, though sufficient, just doesn't stick out as much as those of his teammates.
There you have it, folks: Chapman's fastball, Ottavino's slider, Tanaka's splitter, Cole's changeup, and Britton's sinker combine to make the ultimate Yankees pitcher. Call us crazy, but that hurler wouldn't lose a single game in 2020.
