The Chicago Cubs are activating veteran starter Cole Hamels from the Injured List and plan for him to start Saturday's game against the Milwaukee Brewers. The veteran had been sidelined with an oblique injury since late June, but now looks to give the Cubs a push towards the playoffs down the stretch.

To make room for Hamels returning to the roster, the Cubs designated Brad Brach for assignment. The former All-Star right-handed reliever had a 6.13 ERA in 42 games this season.

Hamels is a welcome addition to the Cubs rotation, as he impressed in his starts prior to the oblique injury. The veteran lefty had a 6-3 record and 2.98 ERA in 17 starts this campaign.

Hamels' return could be viewed as a deadline deal for a starter that cost the team nothing in assets. Hamels paired with ace Yu Darvish combines to form a formidable top of the rotation heading towards October. If both pitch to their standard, the Cubs will make a run for the NL Central division.

As it stands, Chicago sits 0.5 games back of the St. Louis Cardinals for the NL Central lead. Seven of their final 10 games come against the Cardinals, setting up for a good finish in the division.

Hamels will no doubt help Chicago in their pursuit for another division title.
