Cubs Activate Former No. 2 Overall Pick Danny Hultzen at Triple-A Iowa
By Parker White
It appeared the Seattle Mariners had a future ace on their hands when they selected left-handed starter Danny Hultzen with the No. 2 overall pick back in the 2011 draft.
However, his career took a massive hit when he sustained brutal injuries to his rotator cuff and labrun because he pitched through ailments, forcing him to miss all of the 2014 season. He was then let go by Seattle, and the Chicago Cubs signed him to a minor league deal last year.
Hultzen has now become a full-time reliever, and after being activated from the IL on Thursday, it looks like he has a chance of being called up some time this summer.
The 29-year-old southpaw still has a ways to go in proving he's healthy enough to be called up and be relied up down the stretch. However, even Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein believes that Hultzen has a chance of coming up and helping the big league club in due time.
Hultzen began his comeback with the Cubs last year, appearing in 10 games (three starts) between rookie ball and Triple-A, owning a 5.19 ERA with 16 strikeouts over 8.2 innings.
In just five appearances at Iowa this season, Hultzen has tossed four scoreless appearances with six strikeouts over 3.2 innings. Game on.
