Cubs Bring Pedro Strop Back From IL
By Sean Facey
A key bullpen arm has returned for the Cubs, and not a moment too soon.
Chicago has reinstated right-handed reliever Pedro Strop from the 10-day injured list, optioning righty Dillon Maples to Triple-A Iowa in a corresponding move.
Strop was initially pulled from action after suffering a Grade 2 left hamstring strain in the beginning of May. He made three appearances in Triple-A, allowing just one hit and one walk in three innings of work during his rehab assignment.
In 10.2 innings with the Cubs this year, Strop sports a 5.06 ERA with four saves in six opportunities. Three of the six runs Strop has allowed this year came as part of his most recent appearance against the Marlins during which he failed to record an out.
Strop will likely be slotted in as the team's closer once again. While his numbers are far from reassuring this year, he's likely the most talented arm in Chicago's bullpen, especially considering Brandon Morrow remains shelved with no timetable for his return.
He gives the Cubs an additional option out of an otherwise struggling bullpen that has seen seven different relievers blow at least one save this year. It takes pressure in particular off of Steve Cishek, who has closed seven games since Strop went to the IL.
This is a big reinstatement for the Cubbies, as they seem to be a reliever or two away from looking like a serious threat in the National League. They've done enough to jump out to an NL Central lead, and now they look to find the missing piece to their puzzle.
