Cubs Call up Carlos Gonzalez After Signing Him to Minor-League Deal Last Week
By Sean Facey
Carlos Gonzalez is back at the major league level.
The Chicago Cubs have called up the veteran outfielder after signing him to a minor-league deal just last week and he'll be starting on Monday against the Los Angeles Angels.
The three-time All-Star has had quite the ride this season. He signed with the Cleveland Indians late in spring training only to be designated for assignment before landing in Chicago.
The once-feared slugger has struggled to piece things together in 2019, slashing .210/.287/.276 in 117 plate appearances, but his potential upside is far greater than that of Jim Adduci, who was designated for assignment to make room for Gonzalez.
He now finds himself on a struggling team that has lost eight of its last 10 games and is in desperate need of some offense.
Perhaps the former 40-home run hitter can provide the spark that the Cubs need to get their offensive machine rolling again as they attempt to retake the NL-Central lead from the Milwaukee Brewers.
