Cubs' Contract Extension Talks With Javy Baez Halted Due to COVID-19

It seems the Cubs have ceased spending a bit in an effort to keep young (non-Kris Bryant) stars like Javy Baez in the fold long-term.

But, in typical Cubs fashion, don't expect a deal to be done between Baez and Chicago anytime soon.

Per the man himself, all conversations were halted when the coronavirus pandemic shut down the game of baseball.

"Obviously, we want to reach an agreement, but right now everything is on hiatus. Just like it happened with baseball, we decided to leave it there. We haven't talked about it anymore," Baez shared with ESPN's Marly Rivera.

Of course, there's a world of uncertainty right now, and it would be foolish to lock into a contract with a specified time frame when we have no idea what baseball will look like in the years to come. It's positive news that Baez is willing to speak on the particulars of their discussions, but we'll have to sit on our hands until this pandemic has passed (somewhat) before we get back to the nitty gritty here.

That pause has not, however, changed Baez's feelings about Chicago or the organization.

This is where he wants to be. Once the landscape is clear, there's plenty of optimism the two sides will get something done.
