Cubs Fans Should Prepare for Growing Pains Under David Ross
By Chris Pyo
In 2016, David Ross helped the Chicago Cubs win their first World Series championship in over 100 years, hitting a home run in Game 7 of that nostalgic series. The man is a Chicago legend, and fans love 'Grandpa Rossy.'
Now, he'll be tasked with guiding Chicago towards the promised land again, and it won't be the easiest of trips, as he's just been named the organization's new skipper.
After toiling in mediocrity for the first half of the decade, Cubs fans had gotten accustomed to having success under Joe Maddon, and for good reason. Winning the World Series forever made him a hero in The Windy City.
Maddon is an experienced manager with a track record of reviving struggling teams and leading them to success. Will he be able to do so for the Angels? Only time will tell.
However, Cubs fans will definitely have to temper their expectations with Ross and postseason success. In fact, they'll probably have to weather some growing pains.
After all, Ross may be well liked in the Cubs dugout and definitely understands what it takes to win in Chicago, but he's still a rookie manager. He's going to have to balance his personal friendships with his former teammates and put the wellbeing of the team over anything else.
Rookie managers don't have too successful of a track record in their first years, with a recent exception being Alex Cora of the Boston Red Sox, who led the team to a championship in 2018, his first year as manager. However, we all know how things went for Boston this campaign.
Ross is probably the best hire Theo Epstein could've ever wished for, but that doesn't mean everything's going to be immediately rosy for the 2020 MLB season. That's just how baseball works.
