Cubs Hiring Gabe Kapler Would Prove They're Completely Clueless
By Parker White
The Chicago Cubs decided not to bring back Joe Maddon, who is one of the more well-respected managers in the sport. Okay, that's fine. Sometimes you need a new voice, and the 2019 Cubs personified this after showing a surprising a lack of fight down the stretch.
Yet, why are they taking the time to interview recently-fired Philadelphia Phillies manager Gabe Kapler?
Kapler is no idiot and I'm sure he has some great qualities teams seek in a manager, but the results show an average to below average skipper, as he went .500 (81-81) last season for a Phillies team with high expectations.
As you can imagine, there are Cubs fans on Twitter who wouldn't like it if Kapler got the job.
I understand the Cubs going in a different direction post-Maddon, but there are so many other candidates who make a lot more sense than Kapler, even if they are looking for a younger, analytically-minded skipper.
No matter who their manager becomes, it doesn't change the expectations the Cubs will have with this current team. They aren't rebuilding. They've put so much money in this team that it's still World Series or bust.
How did that work for Kapler in Philly?
