Cubs and Javier Baez Discussing Extension But Have Agreed Upon Opening Day Deadline
By Michael Luciano
The Chicago Cubs have a superstar primed to continue dominating in Javier Baez, but the two sides face an uncertain future given the fact that he has been angling for a new contract for some time now.
The Cubs and Baez have been discussing an extension and are eager to come to an agreement, per Jon Heyman. The two sides have agreed, however, that they will cease talks of a new deal once Opening Day rolls around in order to allow the star infielder to focus on the campaign at hand.
Baez is coming off of a season in which he hit .281 with 29 home runs and 85 RBI, making his second consecutive All-Star team along the way. He has since surpassed Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo to become the marquee star on the North Side. At 27 years old, it's a prime time to lock Baez down for the future.
With Milwaukee Brewers superstar Christian Yelich putting pen to paper on a massive contract just a few days ago, Cubs fans are desperate to see their team finally secure a deal with their transformative superstar.
Even if the news of a Baez extension doesn't come soon, this latest rumblings appear to be a sign that the two sides could be progressing towards something noteworthy in the near future.
