Cubs' Reported Interest in Ken Giles Further Proves Front Office Has No Idea How to Build Bullpen
By Jared Kish
The Chicago Cubs bullpen has done little to help the team achieve the top spot in the NL Central. The unit as a whole has struggled to the tune of a 4.04 ERA and only 8 saves on the season. For a team with World Series contention, they need better results from their late-inning arms.
According to Bruce Levine of 670 The Score, Jays broadcaster Buck Martinez stated that the Cubs have asked for the availability of closer Ken Giles.
Despite pitching decently this season, Giles had a rough season last year. In fact, he had an ERA at 4.65 and didn't quite show his emotions well when he walked off the mound in a game last season punching himself in the face.
The Cubs should be clear, however, Giles isn't the answer to their problems. His postseason stats are horrendous, which could be an issue for a contending Cubs team, and he's had a history of character flaws in the past.
In 2017 with Houston in the playoffs, Giles gave up 12 hits, 10 runs, and had an ERA above 11 in 7.2 innings pitched. The following year, he punched himself in the face after blowing a save and later got into an altercation with manager AJ Hinch, which led to his departure to Toronto.
An MLB closer is suppose to shut down big games, and the Cubs should look elsewhere for some bullpen help. Theo Epstein and the Cubs front office should take a dive into Giles' big-game stats before they make a move like this, because it could end up hurting them more than helping.
