Cubs Reportedly Acquire Hurler David Phelps From Blue Jays
By Parker White
The Chicago Cubs have one of the worst bullpens in the game, even following the addition of Craig Kimbrel.
That's primarily why they are on the verge of acquiring veteran right-handed reliever David Phelps from the Toronto Blue Jays, according to ESPN's Jesse Rogers. Phelps, luckily, can do a more-than-adequate Jesse Chavez impression in the middle innings.
Toronto will receive minor league right-hander Thomas Hatch in return for Phelps.
After missing all of the 2018 season due to Tommy John surgery, the 32-year-old right-hander signed with the Blue Jays this offseason on his road to recovery after spending the 2017 season with the Miami Marlins and Seattle Mariners.
In 17 appearances this season, Phelps owns a 3.63 ERA with 18 strikeouts over 17.1 innings.
The Phelps acquisition is huge for the Cubs, who just placed veteran reliever Pedro Strop on the injured list, who'll be replaced by right-hander Duane Underwood, who made his MLB debut last season.
In an eating innings sort of way, Phelps really helps.
