The Chicago Cubs have officially given up on stringy reliever Carl Edwards Jr, and have officially sent him out west.

The Cubs traded Edwards, who had recently been demoted to their Triple-A team in Iowa, to the San Diego Padres.

Edwards was a fixture in the Cubs bullpen for the last few years, as the rail-thin righty and his triple-digit heater were as unhittable as anyone else in that pen. With a career average of 4.7 hits per nine innings allowed, including two seasons in which he allowed fewer than 4 hits per nine, dodging bats has never been a question for the man.

Rather, it's been his command that has failed him in fits and starts, as he has more walks (9) and runs allowed (11) than hits surrendered (8) this year.

If the Padres can sprinkle whatever fairy dust they gave Kirby Yates on Edwards, he could return to his borderline All-Star form.

While Yates covers up for a lot, San Diego's bullpen is still a below-average unit. Edwards back in his old form would give the Padres an unhittable 1-2 punch at the end of games.
