Cubs Should Officially End Addison Russell Experiment After Latest Demotion

The 2019 MLB campaign has been a brutal one for Chicago Cubs second basemen Addison Russell. Through 55 games and 146 plate appearances, Russell is batting a meager .247 with just 36 hits, 6 home runs and 16 RBI.

Russell's problems also go far beyond his performance at the plate. The 25 year old has been known for consistently making mental errors in the field, often missing or misreading signs and making simple mistakes with the ball. Due to his miserable performance this year, Russell was recently sent down to the Cubs' Triple-A affiliate.

Although the move was made primarily to open up a roster spot for catcher Willson Contreras, it's no mistake Russell was sent down. After sitting out the past three games, Russell has been at the bottom of the Cubs depth chart especially thanks to the solid play of rookie Robel Garcia.

The question must be asked: why are the Cubs hanging on to Addison Russell despite his problems both on and off the field? Russell has his fair share of off-field problems surrounding his marriage, just adding insult to injury with his recent on-field struggles.

With all this in mind, it's a mystery as to why Russell still remains part of the Cubs' system. Although he's owned up to his issues on the field, Russell's performance and numbers don't justify Chicago keeping him around.
