Cubs Sign Top International Catcher With Largest Bonus in Franchise History
By Brendan Azoff
Tuesday was a big day for many teams regarding international signings, as the Yankees won the day by inking the talented switch-hitting outfielder Jasson Dominguez to a lucrative $5 million deal.
The Bombers weren't the only winners however, as it was an especially important day for the Chicago Cubs who were able to land the top international catching prospect to a $3 million dollar signing bonus contract, the largest in their franchise's history.
The catcher, Ronnier Quintero, is the sixth overall international prospect and the Cubs wanted to make sure that he signed with them by offering such a lucrative deal. Quintero is a good catching prospect and his value increases due to his left-handed hitting ability at the plate.
Quintero's skillset is raw, but with all the makings of a future star, the Cubs may have found a gem in this year's international class that was highlighted by the big fish in Dominguez. He appears to have a strong arm and solid footwork behind the plate, as well as a smooth lefty swing, that has a slight upper-cut which all teams love.
They also scooped up shortstop Kevin Made, the 11th overall prospect, a 16-year-old out of Bani, Venezuela, capping off a small but effective day of recruitment on the international scene.
