Cubs Signing Former Braves Pitcher Dan Winkler
By Sean Facey
The bullpen was a major issue for the Chicago Cubs last year, so this offseason it seems as though they're prepared to make a handful of moves to ensure they head into 2020 with some talent for the late innings.
The Cubs have agreed to a one-year deal worth $750,000 with former Atlanta Braves reliever Dan Winkler.
He was an elite relief arm for the Braves in 2018. Winkler pitched in 69 games and allowed just three home runs, fanning 69 batters in the process.
But 2019 was a different story. Winkler struggled to find himself on the mound last year in the majors, pitching to the tune of a 4.98 ERA in 27 appearances. He did, however, find success in Triple-A, where he managed a far more respectable 2.93 ERA in 30.2 innings of work.
If he can take that success and apply it at the MLB level, the back end of the Cubs' bullpen could end up looking a whole lot better than it did last season when they finished 20th in the league in fWAR.
There's plenty of upside with Winkler, especially on a low-risk deal like this, and there's nothing not to like now that the Cubs have lost former a key arm in Carl Edwards Jr. He could end up proving to be one of the best under-the-radar signings of the offseason when all is said and done.
