Cubs to Reportedly Extend Protective Netting at Wrigley Field in 2020
By Sean Facey

It sounds as though the White Sox won't be the only team in Chicago next year with new netting.
Their neighbors on the North Side, the Cubs, will reportedly extend the protective netting at Wrigley Field in 2020, like many teams are doing in response to various frightening incidents.

The organization is said to be in talks with firms that specialize in creating and implementing protective netting.
However, the new nets will likely not extend all the way to the foul poles as they do at Guaranteed Rate Field. It seems as though the most heavily favored idea would be to extend the nets to where the old bullpens used to be, though there's nothing official as of yet.
The dimensions down the lines at Wrigley are rather tricky when it comes to netting, and there are concerns that fully extended netting would obstruct views.
I’m pretty surprised by how many people don’t want the netting expanded. I think it’s a no brainer.

Not sure how you can watch the Almora thing and think otherwise.
Good thing they’re not making the call. #Cubs @bleachernation https://t.co/3G46kUqMmq
But regardless off the final product, it's encouraging to see yet another MLB team committing themselves to the promotion of fan safety. Baseballs are flying off of bats and into the stands at blazing fast speeds now more than ever. There have been multiple terrifying incidents this year that have left fans bloodied, bruised and concussed.
The Cubs know firsthand just how brutal those foul balls can be. Back in May, Albert Almora Jr. struck and hospitalized a young fan in Houston with a foul ball, an event that sparked the league-wide discussion of extending netting.

Other teams, such as the Orioles, Dodgers and Blue Jays, have also committed to extending their netting for the start of next season.
Hopefully more teams follow suit in the near future so fans everywhere can enjoy the game safely without fear of unexpectedly being struck by a ball.
